How Do I Get an ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Canada?

How Do I Get an ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Canada?

Many people considering an ADHD assessment or treatment have practical questions. For example, how do you actually get an assessment for ADHD in Canada? Who conducts this? What requirements must be met? Are assessments and treatment offered separately?

Common Questions about ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Canada

Many people considering an ADHD assessment or treatment have practical questions. For example, how do you actually get an assessment for ADHD in Canada? Who conducts this? What requirements must be met? Are assessments and treatment offered separately?

We will touch on the logistics involved, such as how a diagnosis is conducted, as well as medication, therapy and insurance. This guide tells you everything you should know about online ADHD assessments and treatment in Canada.

A note on misinformation: A recent study published in the National Library of Medicine, found that more than 50% of the top 100 TIK TOK ADHD videos were medically inaccurate (Schiros et al., 2025). Your mental health treatment should not rely on well-intentioned, but inaccurate content. Leave it to medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosing and treatment of ADHD.

When to Consider an ADHD Assessment?

Difficulty focusing or organizing tasks

If you are someone who is frequently falling behind and have trouble keeping up, adult ADHD symptoms could be causing this. Research shows that individuals with ADHD have difficulty focusing on tasks and experience difficulty organizing (Sandy Maynard, 2024). A formal assessment will give you a clear vision of what is going on.

Chronic procrastination

One of the hallmarks of ADHD is procrastination. If you know what you have to do, but can not get yourself to start, ADHD might be involved. The leading theory behind ADHD is a deficit of dopamine (Low, 2026). Dopamine and epinephrine play a crucial role in motivation to start, follow through and complete tasks.

Mental fatigue or overwhelm

Do you ever feel like it's just too much? Do the demands of life make you feel exhausted? Many people are surprised to find out that ‘shut down’ is actually a common ADHD response (Soler-Gutiérrez et al., 2023). These challenges can occur for simple tasks such as tidying your home or sending an email. Learn more about it here Blog | Executive Dysfunction, Shutdown, or Depression? How to Tell and What Helps

ADHD Assessment and Treatment

ADHD Assessment and Treatment planning can look different from company to company. Asking yourself why you want an assessment and what you are seeking for treatment may help you with choosing a provider for your ADHD assessment.

What to expect if you choose to have an ADHD Assessment with Cognito Health:

Step 1: Book an Initial Intake✅

  • This intake serves to assess eligibility and rule out other conditions with similar symptoms to ADHD.

Step 2: Complete Requirements✅

  • During your initial intake, you will be asked to complete some brief requirements before your ADHD assessment. If you feel this may be a barrier to getting started, just book an online appointment to have a Cognito staff member guide you through the questionnaires step-by-step.

Step 3:  ADHD Assessment✅

  • Attend your ADHD diagnostic appointment, where you will get to further discuss your symptoms, assessment results and have any questions answered.

Step 4: Treatment Planning✅

  • The medical provider will email you the results of your ADHD assessment and recommend a personalized treatment plan that may include medication and/or CBT skills-based therapy or coaching.

What ADHD Related Services Are Accepted by Insurance

Mental health insurance coverage can vary widely for individuals, so it is always recommended you check with your provider first. Here are some typical ADHD related services covered by insurance:

  • The one-time fee for ADHD diagnostic assessment
  • The medications that you are prescribed
  • Therapy or Counselling

Services that may be covered through your insurance health spending account (HSA), or wellness spending account (WSA):

  • ADHD coaching
  • The management and monitoring of medication overtime

How clients can check their insurance coverage

Please use our insurance calculator here: Insurance Calculator. Please double check with your insurance provider whether you pay for the service first and they reimburse you, or if they pay first and you pay the difference. Some of the common insurances we accept are manulife, greenshield and bluecross.

Do I Have to Sign a Contract for the Coaching or Therapy Treatment?

Many people worry they will be locked into therapy commitments. Some companies do require a three month, six month or even longer commitment.

Cognito Health strongly believes that if you provide a valuable service, you don’t need to “lock” people in financially. If the only reason you are showing up is the guilt of finances, your heart is not in it, and this can affect your outcomes.

With Cognito you can cancel at any time, for any reason. This could include determining we are not the right fit for you, the improvement of symptoms or simply changing your medication management to your primary physician.

Why flexibility is important in mental health care

At Cognito Health we want to provide individuals with the services that they need, when they need them. It is about finding the right care for you. Our team is always open to feedback to ensure your care is a collaborative process.

Do I Have to Take Medication If I Am Diagnosed With ADHD?

No interest in medication? No problem. Here at Cognito Health we tailor our treatments to our clients’ individual needs. You will never be asked to engage in a treatment that you are not comfortable with.

Medication is always optional

Medication is optional. Despite research showing that a multi-modal approach of medication and CBT therapy to be the most effective for managing ADHD symptoms, we recognize that some individuals may not be interested. That is okay– we will work together to find the best fit.

Non-medication ADHD treatment options

The non-medication option is ADHD specific CBT therapy and coaching. In other words, learning evidence based techniques, approved by our consulting psychiatrists and delivered by a certified CBT Care Provider. These techniques are aimed at improving motivation, organization, time management and more.

When medication may be recommended

The severity of ADHD symptoms can differ among individuals. If the medical provider notes no substantial improvement in symptoms with evidence based techniques, they may discuss this with the client and recommend an individual to try medications. Some clients report needing medication, to allow them to better utilize the evidence based techniques.

Can I Get ADHD Medication From Cognito Health If I Already Have a Diagnosis Elsewhere?

Why a new ADHD assessment is required

No. The reason being that in order to ensure your diagnosis is held to the highest and most thorough clinical standards, we conduct our own assessments based on the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance guidelines– the ‘gold-standard’ for ADHD assessments.

In addition, medical history can change over time, and this can significantly impact the effectiveness of medication and therapeutic treatment. That is why a new assessment is required to measure current symptoms, compared to one you had done previously.

Why clinics cannot prescribe medication without their own assessment

Ethically and legally, you can not be prescribed ADHD medication without a formal, recognized ADHD diagnostic assessment.

Why a Diagnosis is Required:

  • Legal compliance - Prescribers are legally required to have documented evidence of ADHD before prescribing controlled medications
  • Patient safety - ADHD medications can affect heart rate, blood pressure, sleep, and appetite; proper assessment is essential
  • Appropriate treatment - Symptoms may be caused by other conditions (anxiety, depression, sleep disorders); treating without diagnosis may not address the root cause
  • Risk of misuse - Stimulant medications have potential for dependence and misuse; diagnosis ensures safe, responsible use

However, you can absolutely do ADHD coaching or therapy without getting an ADHD diagnosis through us. The assessment through Cognito is specifically required for those interested in medication management.

Conclusion

It is normal to feel unsure of what to expect for an ADHD assessment and treatment. After all, you have never done this before. We have designed our services with you in mind. You have a variety of options that will be suggested by the medical provider based on your history. Our team is here to support you along the way. Together, we can figure out what your next best steps are.
